A guide for expecting families in Calgary & Airdrie
If you're expecting a baby, first of all — congratulations. 🤍 This season is so special and it truly goes by so quickly.
One of the things many parents start thinking about during pregnancy is newborn photography. Those tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and little yawns change so quickly in the first few weeks of life.
Over the years, these are the most common questions expecting parents ask me before booking their newborn session, so I thought I would put them all together in one place to help make the process a little easier.
1. When should I book my newborn session?
Most of my clients book their newborn session during their second trimester to make sure there is space available around their due date.
Newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first 7–14 days after baby arrives, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses.
Because I only photograph a limited number of newborns each month, booking during pregnancy is the best way to guarantee availability.
2. What if my baby comes early or late?
This is one of the biggest worries parents have, but there is no need to stress.
I schedule newborn sessions based on your due date, not a fixed calendar day.
Once your baby arrives, you simply send me a message and we adjust the session date so we can photograph your baby at the perfect stage.
3. Do I need to bring outfits or props?
Nope! One of the things many families love about studio newborn sessions is that everything is already provided for you.
In my studio, I have a large collection of:
• wraps
• newborn outfits
• headbands and bonnets
• props and baskets
• soft backdrops
This means you can simply show up with your baby and relax while I take care of the rest.
4. What should parents wear?
Neutral tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your baby.
Soft creams, light greys, and warm neutrals tend to photograph best and create that timeless look many families love.
I also have a client wardrobe available for mothers, including beautiful gowns designed specifically for maternity and newborn photos. Before your session, I’ll send a session prep guide with outfit tips to help you plan what everyone will wear.
5. Are parents and siblings included?
Absolutely.
I always love including parents and siblings in newborn sessions because these images often become some of the most meaningful photos families keep for years to come.
And yes — furbabies are welcome too, because they are part of the family.
6. How long does a newborn session take?
Newborn sessions typically last about 2–3 hours.
This gives us plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing baby, and gently posing them while keeping the experience relaxed and comfortable.
There is never any rush — the session always moves at baby’s pace.
7. Is newborn photography safe?
Safety is always my top priority during every newborn session.
I use safe posing techniques, properly support baby’s head and body, and always follow baby’s lead. If a baby is uncomfortable in a position, we simply move on to something else.
Your baby’s comfort and safety always come first.
8. How many images will we receive?
My newborn sessions are structured with a session fee to reserve your date, and digital collections are chosen after you view your gallery.
This allows families to choose the images they truly love and build a collection that feels right for them.
9. How far in advance should we book?
Because I only photograph a limited number of newborns each month, booking early during pregnancy is the best way to secure a session around your due date.
Many families book during their second trimester to guarantee availability.
10. How do I choose the right newborn photographer?
Choosing a newborn photographer is a very personal decision.
Look for someone whose work and style you love, and who prioritizes safety, experience, and creating a relaxed experience for new parents.
Your newborn photos will become part of your family's story, so it’s important to choose someone you feel comfortable with and trust.
