What to Pack for a Flight with a Two-Year-Old (Real Mom Checklist from Our Trips with Jasper) ✈️🧸

Flying with a toddler can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first trip as a mom. I remember packing and repacking before traveling with Jasper, wondering if I had enough snacks, enough toys, enough everything.

But after traveling with my two-year-old, I learned something that honestly brought me so much peace: You don’t need perfection. You just need preparation, flexibility, and a whole lot of grace.

This is the real-life packing guide I wish someone had handed me before our trip.

🎒 How I Organized Our Bags (This Made Travel Feel So Much Calmer)

One of the sweetest (and most practical) things I did was get Jasper his own little backpack to wear. I filled it with a few toys and a couple snacks so it was easy to grab things quickly during the flight without digging through a big bag.

Inside Jasper’s backpack I packed:

  • Water Wow books (his absolute favorite)

  • Reusable sticker books

  • A few Hot Wheels cars

  • A couple easy snacks, like fruit snacks and goldfish crackers

He loved carrying his own bag and it made him feel included in the travel day, which was honestly so special to see.

My personal item was our diaper bag, which held all the main essentials like wipes, extra clothes, snacks, and travel necessities.

We also brought a small carry-on suitcase just for Jasper that had his Trash Truck and his blanket inside. Those are his comfort items, and I could not risk them getting lost in checked baggage. Having them close by gave both of us peace of mind.

🧸 Entertainment (Simple, Familiar, and Comforting)

At two years old, toddlers don’t understand long travel days — and that’s okay.

They just need familiar, engaging things that help them feel secure.

Jasper especially loved his cars and Water Wow books. Those were by far the biggest hits on the plane. I highly recommend bringing a couple new toys they have never seen before so they still have that little “WOW” factor when you pull them out mid-flight.

Our go-to activities:

  • Water Wow books (mess-free and perfect for planes)

  • Reusable sticker books

  • Small Hot Wheels cars (perfect for little hands)

  • Interactive books

  • Coloring book + chunky crayons

  • One or two brand-new surprise toys

And honestly? One of the funniest things was that Jasper was just as entertained by the magazines and safety pamphlet in the seat pocket as he was by his toys.

He thought it was absolutely hilarious to take them out of the holder, watch them fall, and then put them back in… over and over again.

It was such a good reminder that toddlers don’t always need elaborate entertainment — sometimes the simplest things become the most exciting.

A gentle tip: rotate toys instead of giving everything at once. It keeps things feeling fresh and exciting throughout the flight.

🍿 Snacks (Your Quiet Little Lifeline)

If there is one thing I would lovingly tell every mom traveling with a toddler:

Pack more snacks than you think you’ll need.

Travel days are long, overstimulating, and toddlers often snack instead of eating proper meals.

What worked beautifully for us:

  • Crackers

  • Cheese puffs / popcorn twists

  • Cut fruit (like blueberries or strawberries)

  • Pouches

  • Granola bars

  • Yogurt melts

  • Spill-proof snack cup

  • Extra backup snacks (always)

Snacks helped regulate moods, prevent meltdowns, and gave little moments of comfort during the flight.

🧃 Drinks & Hydration

  • Spill-proof sippy cup

  • Empty water bottle (fill after security)

  • Milk if part of your routine

  • Diluted juice if that’s what your toddler is used to

Planes are very dry and busy environments, and staying hydrated really helps little ones feel better.

👕 Extra Clothes (For the “Just in Case” Moments)

Make sure to pack a full change of clothes in your carry-on for your toddler.

Spills, snacks, milk, and little accidents happen quickly when traveling.

I packed:

  • 2 extra outfits for Jasper

  • Extra socks

  • A cozy sweater (planes can be chilly)

And a gentle reminder from one mom to another:

Bring an extra shirt for yourself too. You’ll be holding snacks, drinks, and a tired toddler all at once.

🧷 Diaper Bag Essentials (Your Comfort Zone Bag)

Since my diaper bag was my personal item, it held everything I might need quickly:

  • Diapers or pull-ups

  • Wipes

  • Portable changing pad

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Lotion (for dry airplane air)

  • Plastic bags for dirty clothes or diapers

  • Tissues

Having everything in one familiar bag made the whole day feel less overwhelming.

😴 Comfort Items (Truly the Most Important)

Travel is a big change for little ones, and familiar comfort items can make such a difference.

For Jasper, we made sure to bring:

  • His blanket

  • His Trash Truck

  • Familiar favorite toys

Keeping these in our carry-on (not checked baggage) was something I felt strongly about. Those small comforts helped him feel safe and grounded in a very new environment.

🔋 A Gentle Backup Plan (Screens Without Guilt)

Even if you don’t normally rely on screens, travel is different — and that’s okay.

Helpful backups:

  • Tablet or phone with downloaded shows

  • Headphones (optional, Jasper wouldn't wear them so we just kept the volume low)

  • Charging cable

  • Portable charger

Downloading everything ahead of time gives you peace of mind for delays or overtired moments. We got a extra microSD for his Amazon Tablet so we could download more shows from Netflix for him.

🤍 A Real Mom Moment (Because Toddlers Have Minds of Their Own)

Even with all the planning, all the snacks, all the toys, and all the preparation…

two-year-olds still have minds of their own.

On our flight home, Jasper was completely exhausted after a long trip full of family events, busy days, and very little sleep. None of my usual tricks were working. Not the snacks. Not the toys. Not even his favorites.

And in that moment, a kind mom sitting two rows behind us offered one of her child’s toys to help calm him down.

It was such a small gesture, but it meant so much.

So to that sweet mom —

thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.

Because sometimes, no checklist or packing list can replace kindness and understanding from another parent who just gets it.

✨ A Loving Reminder for Moms Traveling with Toddlers

You can plan beautifully.

You can pack thoughtfully.

You can bring all the right things.

And your toddler may still get tired, overwhelmed, or emotional — and that does not mean you did anything wrong.

Giving Jasper his own little backpack, keeping essentials in the diaper bag, and packing his comfort items in our carry-on made our travel day so much smoother… but the biggest lesson?

Traveling with a toddler isn’t about having control.

It’s about showing up prepared, staying flexible, and leading with love.

You’ve got this, mama. ✈️💛

Even on the messy, tired, unpredictable moments — you’re doing an amazing job.
