Cars, Trucks, and Buses Too… Jasper’s Rolling Into TWO Cake Smash | Airdrie + Calgary Birthday Photographer

I still cannot believe I’m saying this…
Jasper is TWO.
Not a baby.
Not a one-year-old.
A full, silly, car-obsessed, personality-packed TWO-year-old.
And if you know anything about me as both a mom and a photographer, you already know there was zero chance we were skipping a birthday cake smash.

Starting His Birthday the Only Way a Photographer Mom Would — A 9AM Cake Smash
We actually started Jasper’s birthday the same way we start so many milestone memories in my studio… with a fully custom cake smash setup.
Yes, at 9am.
Yes, before the day even really started.
And yes, it was chaotic and magical all at once 😂
This year’s theme had to be vehicles because Jasper is completely obsessed with cars, trucks, buses — basically anything with wheels. It’s his biggest interest right now (very on brand for him).
So I designed and built the entire set around that.

The Custom Setup (Made Specifically for Jasper)
This setup was extra special because it wasn’t just cute — it was him.
I created:
Foam board cutouts of a fire truck, garbage truck, and school bus
A road arch backdrop to tie the whole theme together
Bright balloon garlands in blue, yellow, red, and green
A large marquee “2” to mark the milestone
And of course, a simple cake topped with a little car
Every single detail was chosen around his personality and current obsessions, which made the session feel so personal instead of just “another cake smash.”

The Funniest Part? He Normally HIBERNATES When He Sees My Camera
As a photographer mom, you would think my child would love the camera.
Nope.
Photographer kid syndrome is very real over here.
Jasper is usually very “absolutely not, mom” when the camera comes out, so I fully expected:
Running away
Ignoring the cake
Zero smiles
Chaos toddler energy
But the SECOND he saw the cake with the little car on top?
Everything changed.

Why Two-Year-Old Cake Smashes Are Honestly My New Favorite
I know first birthdays get all the hype (and they always will be special), but two-year cake smashes hit differently.
At one year old, babies are often confused.
At two years old? Their personality shines through in the BEST way.
During his session, Jasper:
Pointed at everything on the set
Got curious about the vehicles
Smiled and stuck his tongue out
Interacted with the cake instead of just staring at it
Ran around the set like he owned the place
He wasn’t just sitting there — he was fully experiencing it.
And that is what made these photos so special.

The Cake Was the Real MVP
We kept the cake simple and toddler-friendly, but added the little car on top because details matter (especially when your toddler is vehicle-obsessed).
And let me tell you…
He was a BIG fan of the chocolate cake.
Like, suddenly cooperative.
Suddenly happy.
Suddenly my most compliant subject ever 😂
Honestly, I think the cake bribed him more than I ever could.

A Birthday Morning I’ll Never Forget
What made this even more emotional for me is that this wasn’t just a client session.
This was my baby’s birthday morning.
Watching him stand in a set I built just for him, giggling, exploring, and showing off his little personality felt so surreal.
Two is such a special age.
They’re silly.
They’re expressive.
They’re curious.
And they finally show who they are in photos.

The Rest of the Day
We truly made a full day of celebrating him from start to finish. His birthday actually began bright and early at 5am (hello, early birthday boy), with slow mommy cuddles, balloons all over the living room, and tiny party hats placed on his cars and trucks — which, for a vehicle-obsessed toddler, was basically the best surprise he could have woken up to.
After his cake smash, we kept the celebrations going with a trip to Build-A-Bear to pick out his $2 birthday bear, which felt like such a fun little tradition to start at two. He was so curious and excited, taking everything in and fully experiencing it in that sweet toddler way.
To end the day, we took him to Sky Castle so he could run, climb, and burn off all the cake and birthday excitement. It was the perfect ending — letting him just play, move, and be a wild, happy two-year-old after such a big, emotional morning.

From a Mom & Photographer — Two-Year Sessions Are Pure Magic
After photographing so many first birthday cake smashes and now experiencing my own child’s second birthday session, I can confidently say:
Two-year cake smashes might be my new favorite.
You get real reactions.
Real personality.
Real joy.
Not just milestone photos — but memories that truly reflect this stage of life.
And one day, Jasper won’t be obsessed with cars.
He won’t smash cake with his whole hands.
And he definitely won’t think my custom sets are the coolest thing ever.
But I’ll always have these images of him turning TWO, covered in frosting, standing in a set designed just for him.
And that right there is exactly why I do what I do. 🎂🚗✨
